Dunes Restoration

The sand dunes along the coast help to protect the homes along the shore from damaging flood waters.  Beachfront homeowners work hard to keep the dunes built up to protect their homes as well as the homes behind them.  We ask guests to please help us in this effort and use only designated beach access points.  Also, please do not dig or play in the dunes and absolutely no vehicles of any kind should be on the dunes or the beach.  We realize that some states do allow driving on the beach but in Alabama it is strictly forbidden. 

The sand dunes do more than protect homes and property.  They also provide habitats for some of our protected species such as migratory birds, sea turtles and the Alabama beach mouse.  

You'll likely notice vegetation growing in the dunes.  Some is naturally occuring (often courtesy of the beach mice) and some is planted by homeowners.  Even local Boy Scouts have volunteered to help with planting!  Sea Oats and Panic Grass, among others, help to build up the dunes and prevent erosion.
